Faridabad Hindustan ab tak/Dinesh Bhardwaj : Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. The field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. It does not solely target negative symptoms. It also seeks to enhance character strengths and positive emotions.
Mental health therapists in the past dealt mostly with psychological diseases and the health issues that came from it. Their focus was less on individual factors like motivation, positive thinking, happiness, and emotional resilience, and more on the manifested symptoms of mental illness.
With the advent of the science of happiness, or positive psychology, a significant shift in the focus of mental health research and practice has been noticed. Positive psychology has opened a new way of looking into problems. The most significant contribution of positive psychology in mental health counseling and therapy is the introduction of happiness as a treatment goal
Keeping the view the importance of the subject the Student Welfare Department of DAV Institute of Management, Faridabad organised a National Webinar on Positive Psychology and Mental Health on 29th June 2020 at 11.30 to 1.00pm. The webinar was attended by 300+ participants.
The initial deliberation was given by Ms, Reema Nangia , Senior counselor and Student Welfare officer. The Principal Director Dr. Sanjeev Sharma addressed the audience and emphasized on positive education which comprise of both traditional skills and happiness. The worldwide high frequency of depression among young people , the small rise in life satisfaction, and the synergy between learning and positive emotion all argue that skills for happiness should be taught. The guest of honor Dr. Ramesh K. Arya congratulated DAVIM for organising the Webinar on such a crucial topic of the day.
Dr. Jasbir Rishi, Vice Chancellor (Officiating), Dean Student Welfare , Head of department, Psychology ,DAV University, Jalandhar was the speaker of the day. She has 33 years of teaching experience, 20 years of experience in counseling services and 5 years of experience at de-addiction centers to her credit. She is an eminent academician, social worker, and media person. Her work as a news reader for Doordarshan Kendra, Jalandhar, earned her wide popularity across Punjab
Dr.Jasbir emphasized that how one must focus on positive traits rather than negative traits. She explained the three pillars of : Positive Psychology as: positive experiences, positive individual traits, and positive institutions. Understanding positive emotions entails the study of contentment with the past, happiness in the present, and hope for the future. She said that One of the key element to be happy is delay in gratification and also to live for others. She also suggested that to be positive one must find work that focuses on your strengths. cultivate gratitude. practise mindfulness. adopt a growth mindset and write a future diary.
The webinar received an overwhelming response from the viewers and as such the chat box was full of queries which were presented by Ms. Neha Sharma and Ms. Akansha Sharma. The closing remarks of the session was given by Dr. Ritu Gandhi Arora, Vice Principal and Registrar. The Webinar concluded with the vote of thanks given by Ms. Dhrity Gulati.
