Ludhiana Hindustanabtak.com/Dinesh Bhardwaj : 27 July Hepatitis, a liver infection caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites, includes five main types: A, B, C, D, and E. While hepatitis A and E are primarily transmitted through contaminated food or water, hepatitis B, C, and D spread through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. The burden of Hepatitis C in Punjab surpasses that of any other state, posing a significant public health challenge, while Hepatitis B continues to be a considerable concern in the rest of India.

In regions prone to seasonal outbreaks, particularly during the monsoon season, it becomes critical to prioritize preventive measures against hepatitis. The conditions prevailing during this time make the transmission of Hepatitis A and E more probable, as these viruses primarily spread through contaminated food or water. Unknowingly consuming contaminated food or water can lead to a rapid spread of the virus within communities. Furthermore, Hepatitis B and C also pose a concern during monsoons, especially in regions where these viruses are already prevalent, as stagnant water and poor sanitation can facilitate the transmission of Hepatitis B and C through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids.

Dr. Rajoo Singh Chhina, Director Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, shares, “Both Hepatitis B and C are insidious diseases that can lead to severe liver damage, cirrhosis, and, in some cases, even liver failure. Individuals with chronic liver diseases, particularly those caused by the long-term infections of Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C viruses are at a greater risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma. If you suspect you have Hepatitis B or C or are at risk, it is essential to seek medical attention and undergo appropriate testing and care to ensure early diagnosis and intervention.”

Dr. Nitin Behl, Additional Director Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, “Vaccination against hepatitis holds paramount importance, particularly in children. Hepatitis A and B, in particular, can cause significant harm, ranging from acute illness to chronic liver damage and even liver cancer over time. By administering the recommended hepatitis vaccines to children, we ensure long-term protection, preventing the transmission of these viruses at an early age and reducing their impact on their future health. Additionally, childhood vaccination plays a critical role in achieving herd immunity, safeguarding not just vaccinated children but also those who cannot receive vaccinations due to medical reasons.”
